THERON YEOMANS SUTPHEN
Born--June 6, 1850.
Died--August 24, 1922.

DR. THERON Y. SUTPHEN, at the time of his death, one of the oldest medical practitioners in Newark, N. J., where he resided, died at his summer camp, at Meddybemps, near Calais, Me. He was seventy-three years old. Dr. Sutphen was born in Walworth, Wayne County, N. Y., June 6, 1850, being the son of Dr. Reuben Morris Sutphen and Hannah Virginia Morris. His elementary education, obtained at the Walworth schools, was supplemented by a course at the Newark High School. In 1871 he entered the medical college connected with Bellevue Hospital, New York, being graduated two years later. Receiving his degree as a physician, Dr. Sutphen began the practice of medicine in Newark. Shortly afterward he was appointed attending physician to the City Dispensary. After three years of general practice he began to devote his attention to diseases of the ear and eye. In 1889 Dr. Sutphen became attending physician at the Newark Eye and Ear Infirmary, then a charitable institution. He also was in charge of the eye and ear department at St. Michael's Hospital. Dr. Sutphen was for some time attending surgeon of the eye and ear department of All Soul's Hospital, Morristown, N. J., and consulting oculist of Memorial Hospital, Orange, N. J.
He served as eye and ear specialist at St. Michael's Hospital until the latter part of 1919 and shortly afterward opened offices with his son in the Medical Arts Building at 1019 Broad Street, Newark. Clubs to which Dr. Sutphen belonged included the Practitioners', the Essex County Medical Society, New Jersey State Medical Society, New York Academy of Medicine, and the American Ophthalmological and Anthological Societies. He was made a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in October, 1920, being one of six Jerseymen thus honored. Dr. Sutphen was twice married. His first wife was Miss Sarah Locke Vail, daughter of Dr. William P. Vail, of Johnsonburg, N. Y. Three children were born of the union, Edward Blair Sutphen, Robert Morris Sutphen and M. Margaret Sutphen. Mrs. Sutphen died in 1907. Dr. Sutphen again married in 1911, his bride being Miss Emma G. Lathrop, for many years regent and historian of New York Chapter, D. A. R., and one of the board of Managers of the Female Charitable Society of New York. She died in 1912. Funeral services were held at his late home, 992 Broad Street, Newark, N. J., on Monday, August 28th, at 2 p.m. Interment was at Cranbury, N. J. Dr. Sutphen became a member of The Holland Society in 1892 by right of descent from Derick Janse (Van Sutphen), the common ancestor of the family, who emigrated from Zutphen or Sutphen in Gelderland in 1651, settling at first probably in New Amsterdam and afterwards in Flatbush. He married Lysbeth Janse Van Nuyse, and died about 1706 or 1707.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the item I receive look exactly like the photographs in the listing?

You will receive exactly the item pictured, minus any display props, measuring tools (such as rulers and scales), measurement comparison items (such as coins), and anything explicitly excluded in the text. Photos are likely not actual size; please see item description for dimensions. If there is a defect not discernible in the pictures, it will be included in the text. If there is a concern or doubt, please ask prior to purchase. Remember that color is a very tricky thing to transmit electronically. There are many variables, including lighting, background, physical filters, digital filters, the capabilities of the monitor on which the image is displayed, and the color perception of the viewer.

Where do you find your items?

Can you send me a photo of an item on a live model?

Generally, no. I'm a one-woman operation and I don't have any live models available.
