This exquisite 10 karat solid yellow gold high school key charm features the seal of DeWitt Clinton High School and the year 1928 in a striking Art Deco design. The charm measures 37.18 millimeters (just over 1 7/16 inches) long, including the bail, by 14.04 millimeters (just over 9/16 inch) wide. It weighs 4.7 grams and is stamped 10K. This vintage scholastic key displays the geometric styling and bold typography characteristic of the Art Deco era, making it both a wearable keepsake and a collectible piece of educational memorabilia.
Excellent condition from the estate of Jacqueline Cato Hijmans Harris, sister-in-law of the original owner.
DeWitt Clinton High School is a historic public high school founded in Manhattan in 1897 under the name Boys High School. Renamed for New York governor DeWitt Clinton in 1900, the school became known for its distinguished alumni and rigorous academics. In 1929, one year after this charm was awarded, the school moved to its present Bronx location on Mosholu Parkway.
Jacqueline Cato Hijmans was born in Java, Indonesia, to Dutch parents on October 8, 1922. Her family returned to Holland in the early 1930s and survived the Nazi occupation during World War II. After the liberation of Holland, she dedicated her life to honoring the American soldiers who helped free Europe. She completed medical school in an accelerated postwar program and came to the United States in 1951 for medical residencies in Kentucky and Boston. In 1954, she arrived at Duke University School of Medicine as a Fellow in Gastroenterology, where she met her future husband, Jerome S. Harris.
In 1957, Jacqueline joined the United States Army Medical Corps, eventually becoming Chief of Gastroenterology at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado. She later continued her military service in the Army Reserves, rising to the rank of Colonel. During her distinguished career, she and her husband traveled extensively to serve Native American reservation hospitals and remote Army bases. She received both the Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal for her service. Jacqueline passed away on February 21, 2019.
