Surprise someone special (or treat yourself) with this gorgeous bowl!
This exquisite orange bowl was manufactured between 1889 and 1895 by the Thompson Glass Company of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, in pattern number 18, also known as American Bowtie. The clarity and color of the glass is excellent any colors you see in the photographs are reflections of the room and lights the photos were taken. This piece sits upright on level surface and has the lovely bubbles and straw marks common to this era of glassware. This piece is 5 1/2 inches tall and 10 1/4 inches in diameter. Excellent estate condition from the liquidation of the Town & Country Antique Mall in Aberdeen, North Carolina, which had the item priced at $125.
Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG), also known simply as "pattern glass," "pressed glass," or Victorian glass, is pressed glass tableware made during the Victorian period (ca 1850-1910), only in America, by hundreds of glass factories, some more long-lived and more well-known today than others.
The Thompson Glass Works produced some beautiful and popular glassware in Uniontown for a relatively short number of years, (1889-1895). It was constructed during the natural gas fever in 1889 at a cost of $100,000. During those seven years, the company had gone through several failures and reorganizations. In 1892 the plant was being fueled by artificial gas. At the time it was the only works using artificial gas in Pennsylvania and one of only two others throughout the country. It was sold by the sheriff on bondholders' claims for $31,000 in 1896. Thomas R. Wakefield, Esq., representing some Pittsburgh bondholders, bought it for $13,100. In 1914 Adam Deemer, a contractor from Uniontown, got the contract to raze the old glass factory. The building was purchased by Areford Brothers, owners of the South Uniontown plan, who wanted the eye sore to be removed to enhance the value of their property. In March of 1915, the chimney stack, 35 feet in diameter and 80 feel high was taken down by Deemer. It took 35 sticks of dynamite to take down the 100,000 bricks. Uniontown (Thompson) glass is still a valuable collectible.
