Surprise someone special (or treat yourself) with this elegant antique brooch!
This exquisite 10 karat yellow gold Fleur-de-Lis brooch features a graceful interpretation of one of history's most enduring symbols. Modeled after the iconic lily, this piece beautifully captures a classic plant and tree theme with clean lines and subtle geometric border engravings. The Fleur-de-Lis has long been associated with French royalty, honor, purity, faith, and noble heritage, and remains a beloved emblem in heraldry and religious art. This brooch also incorporates a hook designed to suspend a watch, chain, lorgnette, or other accessory. Such brooches were often worn as watch pins or used in the manner of a chatelaine during the Victorian period.
The brooch measures approximately 26.23 millimeters (1.033 inches) long by 18.34 millimeters (0.722 inches) wide and weighs approximately 3.01 grams. It is signed with the maker's hallmark "S & C" on the reverse but is unmarked as to gold content. It tests positive on a Tri Electronics G24 gold tester as 10 karat gold. Boasting quintessential late Victorian style, its construction features a traditional unhinged pin stem extending past the edge of the brooch body and a simple "C" catch mechanism. Based on these classic features, the brooch dates to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900. Excellent antique condition from the estate of Lynn Fisher of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Eugenia Lynn Ligon Fisher was born January 7, 1939, the daughter of Ollie and James Harris Ligon of Wilmington, North Carolina. She grew up in Wilmington and attended New Hanover High School before graduating from Salem College in Winston-Salem. For many years she lived in Wilson and Raleigh, North Carolina. Lynn passed away on May 25, 2018.
A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with chains suspended from it. Popular throughout the Victorian era and into the early twentieth century, chatelaines often carried useful household items such as watches, keys, scissors, thimbles, seals, and small purses. The name derives from the French word châtelaine, referring to the mistress of a château or household. Possession of the household keys symbolized authority and responsibility, making the chatelaine both a practical accessory and a visible sign of status. Decorative chatelaines were also worn as fashionable conversation pieces, often displaying beautifully crafted ornaments and personal accessories.
