This beautiful vintage Reed & Barton sterling silver platter is 12 inches in diameter. It is engraved "Society of Chemical Industry American Section William H. Lycan Chairman 1960-1961." This tray is is stamped on bottom REED & BARTON STERLING X365 and CHIPPENDALE. It weighs 670 grams. Age appropriate patina with some scratches; otherwise very good estate condition.
William Hiram Lycan was born on July 15, 1903, the child of Harry and Coral Earnestine Lycan. He received his BS in Chemistry in 1924 and his MS in Chemistry in 1926 and his PhD in Chemistry in 1929 from the University of Illinois at Champaign. In 1930, he began working at DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware. During his seven years at du Pont, Dr. Lycan worked in the organic division, synthesizing anthraquinone dyes. He was married on November 7, 1931 to Janet Grace Brown. From 1938 to 1949, he worked for Pittsburgh Plate and Glass company, first as Director of Research and later as Executive Director of Research of the Paint Division. While there, he worked on basic raw materials, synthetic resins and modified vegetable oils. His son William Gregory Lycan was born in 1945. The culmination of his career was his 20 years at Johnson and Johnson, serving as Director of Research, Vice President and finally as Vice Chairman of Johnson and Johnson International. In 1970 Dr. Lycan received the gold medal of the Society of the Chemical Industry (SCI) for his many contributions to the profession and to the industry. He died on October 11, 1994, in Naples, Florida, at the age of 91.

I ship all items the next business day after I receive them. First Class mail generally takes 3-5 business days in the U.S. Priority Mail takes 1-3 days in the U.S. However, please note that it took the US Postal Service 21 days to deliver one First Class package to California. Shipping to other countries can take 2-6 weeks via First Class International. If you need something for a specific date, consider using Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express.
Generally, no. I'm a one-woman operation and I don't have any live models available. I take great effort to photograph items on measuring devices such as ring mandrels, rulers in millimeters and inches, and scales. I also offer returns, so that if your item is not exactly what you want, you are welcome to return it for a refund.
I offer layaway for items over $300. You may make up to 3 monthly payments for a handling fee of $5. A 10% cancellation fee will be charged if you cancel the order. No discounts apply.
