Nancy Hélène Palmer was born in Miami, Florida on December 27, 1925 to Helen Ericsson and Bascom H. Palmer, a distinguished ophthalmologist, after whom the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami was named.

Bruce received most of his early formal education in England at the County High School at Braintree in Essex and at King Edward's School in Birmingham. He was awarded a scholarship to Downing College, Cambridge in 1936, where he began to read for the Medieval and Modern Languages Tripos, in French and Spanish. The University of Cambridge awarded Bruce a B.A. degree in 1939 and an M.A. degree in 1942. During World War II, the British Government sent him to teach French and Spanish at Wolmers School in Kingston, Jamaica, where he married Joyce Vaz in 1942. There he published his first scholarly articles in Hispanic Review. Bruce's articles caught the attention of editor Miguel Romera-Navarro, who offered him a fellowship to pursue a Ph.D. in Romance Languages at the University of Pennsylvania.

Bruce and Joyce moved to the United States, where their son, Ian Bruce, was born.

Nancy attended the Madeira School in McLean, Virginia, and graduated from Vassar College in 1946.

In 1949, Bruce earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, and accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Romance Languages at Johns Hopkins University. He later taught Ohio State University, during which time Joyce died in 1959.

Bruce returned to Johns Hopkins, where he met Nancy, who was then a graduate student in Spanish literature. they married in Barrow-in-Furness in Great Britain in 1960. In 1963, they settled in Durham, NC, following Bruce's appointment to teach at Duke University. He specialized in Spanish literature of the Renaissance and Baroque periods and also served as a comparatist. He wrote a number of books and articles in these fields, including Spanish Poetry of the Golden Age and Critical Essays on the Theater of Calderon.

Nancy returned to her graduate studies and in 1985 (at age 60), she received her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins.

Bruce retired from Duke in 1989. Nancy taught Spanish at North Carolina Central University for twenty-five years. She was a great supporter of the arts, first as a docent at the Baltimore Museum of Art and later in Durham, raising funds for the NCCU Museum and contributing to the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke. Nancy was active in Durham civic life, serving on the public library board and as a member of the Junior League, often supporting causes dear to her heart by entertaining at their house in Hope Valley.

Bruce died on January 6, 2004, at the age of 84. Nancy died on December 28, 2020, just one day after her 95th birthday.
